Week 7 Homework

Here are my two characters from last week. I only had time to refine the bearded guy's pose and color him a it. I don't know why but I thought his character screamed pink. I'll finish two other characters by next week.

This isn't really part of the assignment, but here are a few mech related things I sketched up. I keep forgetting to bring it to class. I seem to be okay with organic, human shaped mechs, but I am struggling a little with animal or bug type mechs.

Week 6 Homework

Week 6. Two of the silhouettes from week 4 somewhat rendered. I keep finding things I want to change or adjust. The big guy isn't as far along as I'd like. I learned that overly muscular guys are pretty hard to do because you can see every thing.

Week 5 Homework

Still trying to catch up from last week. This was actually a backup drawing I did last week, but I wanted to see how I could improve on it some more before I fully render it. I guess I am more comfortable with line art, but I will try and break that barrier.

Josh- Hey Gary, I checked the thumbnails that I think are the strongest for me. I picked those mainly for the interesting shapes and various weapons that the character has and the poses. I think the bearded dude with the two swords is pretty cool too.

Week 4 Homework: Character Silhouettes

I based the silhouettes off simple shapes. Not exactly to express the type of character or personality, but just gestures. I won't be able to make it to class today and I will draw some more silhouettes later this week.

Week 3 Homework: Finished Color Thumbnails

Here are my reworked pieces from last week. The critique you gave me really helped, Josh. Although I think I still need to mess around with hue/saturation and color balance some more to get the exact look I'm looking for.

Here's a close up of the floating city.

Wk2 Additional Notes:

Josh: Hey Gary here's a quick paintover of the lava image that I didn't get to last week

Week 2 Homework: Color Thumbnails and Environments

Here are some thumbnails. I don't really know when a thumbnail is considered done so the time taken on each varies from 10 minutes to 30 minutes.

From thumbnail #2. Not exactly sure what the floating thing is.

Work in progress from thumbnail #5

 From #6

Week 1 Homework: Film Value Studies and Environment Thumbnails

From Tron (1982), Lord of the RingsL Return of the King (I think), Cowboys and Aliens, Avatar and Sherlock Holmes. Screens from http://framefilter.blogspot.com/.

Environments are among my many weaknesses, but I enjoyed doing these. I approached each one in a different manner since I do not have a concrete way of doing environments yet.

For the top one, I used a hard brush with no pressure at 100% and lasso tool to make some sharp edges.

The second one was done by using a texture brush mostly and some custom brushes for the trees.

The last one was done almost entirely out of custom shapes I made in a previous painting class. Thanks to Tom Scholes (http://artofscholes.com/) for the instruction.

I may do some more for the much needed practice if time allows.

Here's another. My composition was a bit off originally, so I stretched it and now I think the trees on the left might be too overpowering.

Josh- Hey Gary, here's a paintover of the waterfall image

Notes:
-Added some characters and interesting objects to sell the scene.
-Moved the tree to the left side so it frames the waterfall and the characters.
-I set up the light so that it can cast some shadows. Cast shadows and lighted areas can really ground a painting.
-Overlapped the cliffs near the waterfall so it creates more perspective

Introduction:

Hello everyone. Here's a little background info about me. I've been drawing since as long as I could remember, but I never took it really seriously until now. I've been an electrical contractor and a store manager for a cabinet and granite shop for the last five to six years but I've decided to pursue Entertainment Design and follow my dreams.

I am aiming to work in the video game industry possibly as a 3d artist, texture artist or what ever they'd like me to do. I understand that it will take some time for me to get to the point where I'll be making concepts for games and such and I'm willing to work hard to achieve my goals.

I've never been formally trained or taken anything more than a continuing education art class for adults so this will be a new experience for me. I am also taking a few classes from CDA and Art Center. Hopefully, I will improve and eventually break into the industry. Here's to the next few months.
